Mathematical Models for Photodetectors in Quantum Communication

Optical quantum computation and communication protocols often rely on threshold (on/off or bin) photodetectors for measurements. In an ideal world, these detectors herald whenever any amount of light reaches the sensor with perfect efficiency. However, many factors such as detector material, integration time and frequency interference in the light can lower the efficiencies of these detectors, thus impacting the performance of communication protocols. There have been many simplistic models proposed, especially in the context of quantum cryptography, yet so far none have been able to capture the wide variety of physical phenomena in a satisfactory way. In this talk, I propose a new mathematical model for photodetector Positive Operator Valued-Measures (POVMs) based on a quantum open systems approach by Srinivas & Davis (DOI 10.1080/713820643). I will introduce the POVM formalism, go over the assumptions on the model and present at a high level the derivation of the POVM. Finally, I will examine in what conditions the model reduces to existing results. This talk will also set up a future talk where we examine the security implications of this new model in the context of quantum cryptography.
