Perspectives on Quantum Reference Frames

Everett Patterson

The concept of the Quantum Reference Frames (QRFs) has recently become the subject of renewed interest within the quantum gravity community. There, QRFs offer a stepping stone towards a theory of quantum gravity by attempting to “quantize” the notion of reference frames that is central to Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. More generally, the notion of QRFs is of interest to the broader quantum foundations and quantum information communities, where it attempts to describe quantum systems relative to other quantum systems, without having to call upon a classical observer.

In this informal chalk talk, I will present the most simple recent approach to QRFs, known as the Perspectival Approach to QRFs. I will present the underlying assumptions and provide a concrete example which highlights some of the interesting features of the framework including how quantum resources are not invariant under QRF transformations.
