Speaker: Dr. Jerry Dempsey

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences (KHS) is excited to announce that on Wednesday, October 30, Dr. Jerome "Jerry" Dempsey will deliver a lecture titled "Neural Feedback Control of Exercise Physiology and Performance: Knowns and Unknowns." This will take place on October 30 at 2:30 as a part of the KHS department wide seminar.

This talk will be in addition to the graduate lecture series that Dr. Dempsey will be offering during the week of October 28 to November 1. During the week Dr. Dempsey will offer daily 90-minute lectures, scheduled Monday through Friday, covering key topics in respiratory and cardio-respiratory physiology. Topics will include:

  • Monday: Summary of the essentials of the basics of respiratory physiology
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Respiratory responses, adaptations and limitations to exercise in health-untrained and trained
  • Thursday: Modulating effects of aging and chronic disease on the exercise respiratory response
  • Friday: Adaptations/maladaptations to hypoxia in the human - untrained and trained

The seminar is open for all to attend. If you wish to register for the lecture series, please email Mark Valentim (mavalent@uwaterloo.ca).

Dr. Dempsey is a distinguished researcher in respiratory and exercise science, a Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the director of the John Rankin Laboratory of Pulmonary Medicine. His groundbreaking work on respiration during exercise, the mechanics of breathing during wakefulness and sleep has shaped modern understanding of respiratory physiology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dempsey has showcased his passion for research through numerous collaborative efforts with neighboring faculty members and by mentoring 68 pre- and post-doctoral fellows, as well as approximately 100 undergraduate students. He has published 419 peer reviewed papers with over 42000 citations. Originally from Canada, Dr. Dempsey is pleased to return to southwestern Ontario, where his academic journey began, to share his knowledge and engage with the next generation of researchers.
