Teaching

As a teaching and research intensive university, Waterloo believes in the integration of “knowing” and “learning.”

You can expect a rich learning experience incorporating scholarship, research, innovative classroom teaching, and experiential learning.

Inspiring teachers

In the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences, your professors are collaborating with organizations like Health Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, the Institute for Work and Health, and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to identify, solve, and prevent health issues related to human movement. These connections play a key role in ensuring the relevance of our curricula and of your skills as a graduate.

Our teaching and operations staff lead and support experiential education in some of the most well-equipped teaching laboratories in North America.

Beyond the books

We also know that learning extends beyond the textbook and, often, beyond the classroom itself. In addition to Waterloo's world renowned co-operative education program, the Faculty of Health offers numerous opportunities for activity-based or hands-on learning including:

  • state-of-the-art kinesiology lab facilities and activities where you can perfect your skills in movement assessment and treatment
  • School of Anatomy, where you can learn the form and function of the human body with the use of human cadavers and specimens

Supporting teaching excellence

Tamara Maciel.

Tamara Maciel, the department's Teaching Mentor, supports and encourages teaching excellence and best practices to improve the depth, effectiveness, and efficiency of student learning.

Tamara works closely with the Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) to share expertise and resources with instructors and to develop and foster a community of practice – where faculty can share knowledge and experiences to enhance teaching success.
