The Schlegel-University of Waterloo Research Institute for Aging (RIA) announced the appointment of Professor Lora Giangregorio as the new Schlegel Research Chair in Mobility and Aging.

Professor Giangregorio’s research focuses on how exercise can lower the risk of falls and fractures among older adults.

“This role will inspire new research and collaborations, and allow our team to put our research into practice," said Giangregorio.  “Our goal is to support older adults in staying fit and mobile throughout later life.”

Falls remain the leading cause of hip fractures among older adults, and can also lead to spine fractures. More than 80 per cent of all fractures after the age of 50 are the result of osteoporosis, with one in three women and one in five men experiencing an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.

As chair, Professor Giangregorio will focus on advancing exercise guidelines for individuals with osteoporosis and enhancing education for health care providers and care partners.
