MME co-founded biotech startup secures US$2M in seed funding to expand operations
Ceragen was co-founded by Matthew Rose (BASc '21 mechanical and mechatronics engineering), the company's CTO, it develops microbes for soil to help with food production, aid with food security, and advance sustainable agriculture.
The company primarily focuses on customers in greenhouses, and many greenhouses use water-based hydroponic systems to grow crops. However, these systems may not include various beneficial bacteria and fungi found in agricultural soils that help increase the uptake of nutrients, respond to environmental stresses, and fight off pathogens.
The company has already completed trial programs in Canada and the U.S., and the microbes that Ceragen produces can increase crop yield by 10 per cent on average.
With this new funding, the company looks to expand into Mexico and the Netherlands with its two products, which it currently has for lettuce and tomato plants, as well as new upcoming products for strawberries and tomatoes.
