Student Life

New to Waterloo? First of all, welcome! The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering offers an innovative and fun community within the Faculty of Engineering. As part of your time on campus, you’ll have many opportunities to connect with graduate students from all disciplines and explore everything that Waterloo Region has to offer.

Campus life

In between your classes and your research, you’ll be able to find a community where you can thrive and grow. Take part in the many events on campus, participate in a sport in our athletics department, or grab a bite to eat at our Grad House.

Graduate student support:

Here on campus, you have a wealth of support from faculty, staff, wellness, lab techs, and more to help support your time at the university. Plus, you have the support of the University of Waterloo Graduate Student Association (GSA-UW), which represents graduate students at the University of Waterloo and can also provide you with academic support, community, advocacy, and wellness support.

Medium-sized city, big opportunities:

In 2024, Statistics Canada named Waterloo Region the fastest-growing city, crowned it the fastest-growing community in Ontario and one of the fastest-growing communities in Canada. That’s thanks to Waterloo’s amazing ecosystem for entrepreneurs, which is supported by Velocity, Communitech, the Accelerator Centre, and many technology and manufacturing companies putting down roots here.

Preparing for the next step:

Whether you’re looking to make an impact in an organization, need help with a big idea, or are looking to continue your academic journey, we can help! There are plenty of resources on campus to help you with whatever you need. The Centre for Career Development can help you map your career route, Velocity can help you scale your business idea, and our advisors are always here to help you map the next steps of your academic journey.

Student Life

The student experience at Waterloo Engineering goes far beyond work, lectures, and studying. We have an exciting and energetic community of students who love to work hard and play even harder. You can race a dragonboat, join a varsity team, become a leader — whatever your interests, you’ll be in good company.
