Engineering Clinic Activities

MME Workshop Watimake

MME Clinic activities help MME students exercise their design muscles through authentic engineering activities incorporating course content. Examples of activities that have been featured in Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering courses include:

ME 100: Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Practice 1

Hardware Exploration
Students choose examples of mechanical and mechatronics devices donated by members of the community, including bikes, household appliances, and electronics. With their chosen devices, students explore the functions of their devices, how they work, and what parts make up the devices.
Engine Exploration
Students explore snowblower engines to understand how engines work and the parts that make up an engine. With this understanding, students measure parts of the engine and create engineering drawings of engine parts.

ME 101: Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Practice 2

Intro to 3D Printing
Additive manufacturing is an important tool for rapid prototyping. Students design parts to be 3D printed as benchmarks to explore the capabilities of filament-based 3D printers. After a brief introduction to Da Vinci 2.0 3D printers, students build their benchmarks and measure them against the original CAD design.
Intro to Laser Cutting
Laser cutters are versatile rapid prototyping tools for both 2D and 3D designs. Students design parts to be laser cut as benchmarks to explore the capabilities of laser cutters. After a brief introduction to the Epilog Mini 24 laser cutter, students cut their benchmarks and measure them against the original CAD design.

ME 321: Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines

Engine Benchmarking
In connection to the Engine Manufacturing project, students analyse and simulate the dynamic behaviour of piston-crank assembly of 6.5hp internal combustion engines.

ME 340: Manufacturing Processes

Engine Manufacturing Project
Manufacturing process choices effect the price of products. Students explore snowblower engines manufactured by Honda and by a cheaper competitor. Comparing the processes used, students analyse and recommend manufacturing changes for Honda engine parts to reduce the price of the Honda engine.

ME 596: Manufacture of Mechatronics Materials and Components

Demonstrations

Students are introduced to common methods used in the manufacture of mechatronics components and the materials used, including:

  • Additive manufacturing
  • Injection moulding
  • Vacuum thermoforming

MTE 219: Mechanics of Deformable Solids

Truss Boom Project

Students build skills, research, design, analyse, and build truss booms made of laser-cut balsa wood through activities designed to guide them through the design project cycle:

  • WEM Cert: Introduction to safe and responsible use of laser cutters
  • Materials Testing: Testing and analysing material properties of balsa wood
  • Laser Cutting: Designated laser cutting time for truss boom prototyping

ME 380: Mechanical Engineering Design Workshop

ROV Redesign Project

MTE 100: Mechatronics Engineering

  • Engine Exploration
  • Lego Project
  • Traxxas Telluride Exploration

MTE 380: Mechanics Engineering in Design Workshop

Autonomous ROV Project
