Training Requirements

All UW employees, whether full-time, part-time, or contract, must complete mandatory health and safety training as a part of the onboarding process. This includes all faculty, staff, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and so on MUST complete the following Health & Safety module as indicated by the Safety Office:

All employees, whether full-time, part-time, or contract must also complete the revised accessibility training to ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements.

All personnel using or accessing MME lab facilities MUST also complete:

You must also complete any applicable laboratory and/or hazard specific training as required by your supervisor. You must work carefully with your supervisor to determine the required training as described by the Safety Office. Additional information is provided by the Safety Office.

All supervisors must complete additional training, including:

Supervisors working in higher risk areas (including laboratories and workshops) must complete additional training as indicated by the Safety Office.

Training for Undergraduate Students

Required Training for Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students in MME must complete safety training during the first few weeks of each academic term. The specific training requirements will be conveyed by the department each term.

Where training is incomplete, students may be restricted from participating in certain activities (e.g. lab sessions) and academic penalties may be applied.

Courses with laboratory components will likely have their own safety training requirements in order to attend the Lab activities. 

Training for M.Eng. Students

M.Eng. students in MME must complete the following training within the first 4 weeks of their first term of enrolment:

Students must provide verification that this training has been completed as indicated by the department each term.

Where training is incomplete, students may be restricted from participating in certain activities (e.g. lab sessions) and academic penalties may be applied.

Training for M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. Students

M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students in MME must complete the mandatory training requirements of UW employees:

 and the following since access to MME Lab Facilities is required:

Students must complete this training within the first 4 weeks of their first term of enrolment, and before they are provided with keys/fobs to access offices/laboratories as applicable.

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that training requirements are completed and on time!

Students must also complete safety training for the specific lab spaces and equipment that will be accessed/used as required by the supervisors prior to accessing those spaces and equipment.
