The Balinese Gamelan is meant to be heard outdoors, so please join us at Waterloo Town Square for a terrific evening concert. Free admission. This UWaterloo Ensemble is directed by prominent gamelan composer I Dewa Made Suparta and Dr. Maisie Sum. Stay after the concert and try an instrument or two.
Every two years, orchestra@uwaterloo holds a Concerto and Aria Competition that is open to University of Waterloo students and recent graduates, and is judged by a panel of professional musicians. Winners perform as soloists with the orchestra in a public concert.

Repertoire includes the Brahms Piano Concerto #2 in Bb major, with Soloist Eric Xi Xin Liang (winner of the 2018 UW Concerto Competition), Brahm's Tragic Overture, Von Suppé ‘s Poet and Peasant Overture, and Bruckner’s Overture in G minor.
Come experience the polyrhythms and polyphony of Balinese gamelan music played by Waterloo’s two local ensembles: the UWaterloo Balinese Gamelan and Grebel Community Balinese Gamelan. Directed by artist-in-residence, I Dewa Made Suparta, students and community members gather over a 12-week period to learn traditional and modern pieces through listening, imitation, repetition, and memorization.
Six different Instrumental Chamber Ensemble trios will play a lovely selection of classical music. Composers for this term include Brahms, Beethoven, and lesser known composers such as Von Call, Weber, Rheinberger, and Arensky. Chamber Ensembles are directed by Ben Bolt-Martin.

The UWaterloo Jazz Ensemble consists of approximately 20 jazz aficionados playing standard and non-standard jazz instruments. This concert will feature the music of Spyro -Gyra, Al Jarreau, Count Basie, Ernie Watts, and more. This ensemble is directed by Michael Wood. Tickets are available at the door, reception to follow.
