Balinese Gamelan Ensemble - Campfire Concert

Wednesday, June 14, 2023 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)
Balinese Gamelan

Balinese gamelan (semara dana)  are ensembles of primarily percussive instruments made of bronze and bamboo that may include drums, flutes, strings, and voice. An oral tradition taught and learned collectively, repertoire is transmitted in a group setting without the use of sheet music. Directed by Balinese artist I Dewa Made Suparta, students experience a communal process of creating music while also learning about the culture of Bali.
The University of Waterloo has had a Balinese Gamelan Ensemble since 2013, and we are privileged to perform at the City of Waterloo Campfire series.  If you are interested in joining the Ensemble, please visit our website.  Both a student Gamelan and a Community Gamelan are available in Fall 2023.
Please note, there will be time to ask questions and try out the instruments after the performance.

In the Event of Rain

If the weather is inclement, and there is too much rain to perform comfortably the concert will be moved to Conrad Grebel University College, in the Great Hall at 5:15pm.  We will publish a notice if this occurs, so please check the website for updates.
