Originally composed for the Birmingham City Symphony Orchestra’s International Wind Competition in 1966, Fantasy for Flute is one of Arnold’s more complicated works. The piece begins with a lyrical opening section before launching into a frenzy of quaver passages and dramatic melodies. The piece then continues into a comical rendition of the opening theme before returning to the same chaotic character that gives this piece its profound spirit.
Sonata ‘Undine’ for Flute and Piano, Carl Reinecke (1824-1910)
This Sonata depicts the story of an ‘Undine’ water spirit, navigating the path of romance. The story, based on a German romantic tale by Friedrich de la motte Foque, uses four movements with long, flowing melodies, frantic semi-quaver passages and dramatic harmonies to capture the ebb and flows of romance.
