On the island of Bali, Indonesia the idea of community and the spirit of interaction are highly valued and extend to music-making. Being an aural/oral tradition, repertoire—from ritual pieces to modern compositions, instrumental or dance—is learned through imitation and repetition, by listening and watching (i.e., without the use of notation). Students experience this communal process of creating a unified sound on a gamelan semara dana (one of several types of gamelan found in Bali) consisting of gongs, metallophones, drums, and flutes.

Music of Joy and Peace is a collaborative, interactive performance with Mini Ode Kwewak N’gamowak (the Good Hearted Women Singers).

Three amazing student musician Chamber groups perform a selection of classical music pieces.  Music will include the following:

Cello student Vince (Tianren) Gao will be playing works by Ligeti, Beethoven, and Lalo.  Free Admission, reception to follow.

The JUNO nominated Orchid Ensemble is Lan Tung on the erhu/Chinese violin, Xiao Mei Zhu on the zheng/Chinese zither, and Jonathan Bernard on percussion. The ensemble blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful new sound. 

Jennifer Brimson Cooper and Mas Sugihara are an imaginative and intense duo that perform both original compositions for the sax and flute, as well as transcriptions of classical pieces. Amy Waller Prince, a well-known local soprano, will be performing works from Verdi, Strauss, Dvorak, and Greer.  Ms. Prince recently received a Doctorate of Music from Indiana University.  She has performed many operatic roles, including Rosalind in Die Fledermaus, and Mabel in the Pirates of Penzance. 

Cynthia Hiebert has performed both traditional and contemporary harpsichord works in Canada, the United States and England.  This concert will feature works from the time of Shakespeare to Jimi Hendrix.

Whether singing an intimate ballad, performing an intricate fugue, creating stirring world beats, or wailing on a powerful rock anthem, award-winning singer/multi-instrumentalist Kevin Ramessar has a history of moving audiences.  This concert will be an eclectic programme featuring compositions by Domeniconi, Bach, and Joni Mitchell, along with improvised works and a tribute to Canadian icons The Tragically Hip. Kevin Ramessar regularly performs on Broadway, as well as being Grebel's guitar instructor.
