Balinese Gamelan Ensemble: Fall 2021 End of Term Concert

Please join us for a joint online concert with the University of Waterloo Balinese Gamelan Ensemble and the Grebel Community Gamelan.  The video premiere will be released on Thursday, December 9 at 7pm, and will be posted on this website. The Balinese Gamelan Ensemble is directed by Dewa Suparta, a musician, composer, and teacher from Bali, Indonesia.  Dewa Suparta is our Artist-in-Residence and has been at Conrad Grebel since 2014.

Please join us for a tribute to the arrangers of big band jazz presented by the University of Waterloo Jazz Ensemble. Directed by Michael Wood, the Jazz Ensemble has been a crowd favourite for many years.  Special guest saxophonist and UW alumni Ernie Kalwa will also join the band.

Since the partnership between poetry and music is so essential to art song, we wanted to return to our linguistic roots by presenting songs written in our mother tongue.

Noon Hour Online Concert: Composer Ann Southam’s Solo Piano Music

Amelia Grace Yates, D.M.A., is a pianist, adjudicator, and instructor from Ancaster Ontario. A recent graduate of the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Yates’s research focusses on the solo piano music of Canadian composer Ann Southam. She is passionate about researching and performing the music of contemporary Canadian composers. In addition to performing as a soloist, Dr. Yates also enjoys collaborating with others in chamber groups and working with large ensembles and choirs.

Noon Hour Online Concert: Carnatic Violin

Toronto based award winning violinist Subhadra Vijaykumar brings the unique sounds of her Carnatic (South Indian classical) violin to the Chapel at Conrad Grebel. Subhadra will explain Carnatic Music and  how the Carnatic violin, while being identical to the western violin, still differs from it.
