Katrina Kai Lin Chan

In her first year at the School of Optometry & Vision Science, Katrina Kai Lin Chan has already made an impact as class president. Her passion for leadership and dedication to her classmates shine through in everything she does. Originally from Markham, Ontario, and having completed her undergraduate studies at Western University, Katrina brings a wealth of experience to her role. She aims to foster a sense of community and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. We sat down with her to learn more about her journey, her vision for the class, and how she balances her responsibilities.

What motivated you to take on the role of class president?

I’ve always believed in the importance of teamwork and communication, and I felt I could contribute by representing my peers. During the early days of our program, I found myself naturally stepping into a role where I could facilitate discussions and advocate for the needs of my classmates. With encouragement from friends and upper-year students, I decided to take on this leadership role. I saw it as a great opportunity to learn, grow and give back to the community.

As class president, what are some of the key goals or initiatives you hope to achieve during your term?

One of my main priorities is to foster a strong sense of unity and support within the class. It’s important to me that everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas, whether they relate to academics or the general well-being of the group. I also want to ensure that any concerns are addressed in a timely and effective manner. Beyond that, I’m committed to enhancing our student experience in small but meaningful ways, whether it’s advocating for more comfortable spaces for study or helping streamline communication between students and faculty.

Outside of your academic and leadership commitments, what passions or hobbies do you pursue in your free time?

In my spare time, I enjoy staying active and creative. I play the guitar, which is a great way for me to unwind. I also enjoy rock climbing whenever I get the chance, and when I’m home, I love spending time with family and friends. Finding time for these activities help me maintain a healthy balance in life, which I think is important for one's overall well-being.

The School of Optometry has a strong reputation for its sense of community. What has been your experience with the student and faculty environment so far?

The community here is incredible. Everyone is welcoming and eager to help one another, from classmates to upper-year students. It’s a supportive environment where collaboration comes naturally, and there’s a genuine effort to lift each other up. I’m grateful to be part of such a positive space, and I think it really enhances both our academic and social experiences.

Balancing the demands of a rigorous academic program and a leadership role is no small feat. How do you manage your time and ensure a healthy balance?

Time management is key, especially with the rigorous schedule we have in optometry school. I’ve learned to prioritize tasks and make sure I’m efficient with my time. It’s also about recognizing that perfection isn’t always necessary—I remind myself that success isn’t about achieving the highest grades but about maintaining a balance between academic excellence and personal well-being. That mindset has really helped me stay grounded and focused.
