Optimizing optometric scope

University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science statement on how its curriculum aligns with proposed scope modernization

Wednesday, November 26, 2025

The University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science curriculum integrates biomedical and ocular sciences with progressive clinical training. The program includes laser therapeutics and minor surgical procedures. The curriculum at the School adheres to the competencies listed in the American Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) Framework for Developing Optometric Curriculum Guidelines and Educational Standards for Ophthalmic Surgery. All ACOE-accredited schools provide extensive didactic and clinical training in systemic disease, ocular disease, medical physiology, pharmacology, laser safety and basic surgical skills for straightforward office-based procedures such as the ones included in provincial scope requests. Peer-reviewed literature (Swystun, 2025; Jones 2021) has found optometrist-delivered glaucoma and laser care to be safe, effective and associated with patient satisfaction. This data supports the idea that the modernization of scope maintains high safety standards for the public while improving access.
