There are 3 types of students that study at the School of Optometry and Vision Science:

  • Undergraduates are those who want to become an Optometrist and earn a Doctor of Optometry (OD):
    • These students have already graduated high school and also have completed three or more years of university level prerequisites
    • They may also be called "optometry undergraduates" or "undergrads", and "optometry students"

  • Post graduates are those who want to study research and become a Masters of Vision Science (MSc) or a Doctor of Vision Science (PhD) or study as a Post-Doctoral Fellow:
    • These students have already graduated from university undergraduate or graduate programs and wish to further their studies by pursuing vision science research
    • They may also be called "post graduates" or "grads", "grad students" or "post-docs"

  • Internationally trained are those who have received their education outside North America and want to practice as a professional optometrist in Canada:
    • These people have already graduated from an international optometry program
