Dr. Annemarie Dedek receives Future Leader in Canadian Brain Research grant

Waterloo Pharmacy researcher receives $100,000 to advance chronic pain research

Brain Canada’s Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research program is investing $2.6 million to support 26 early-career scientists, awarding each researcher $100,000 to pursue innovative ideas in brain and mental health research.

The funding will support Dr. Annemarie Dedek, an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy, in advancing research into how the spinal cord processes pain signals and how this signalling changes in response to chronic pain.

Dedek’s research uses translational models to better understand the physiological changes associated with chronic pain, with a particular focus on how sex and sex hormones influence the processing of painful stimuli. Her lab aims to uncover differences in pain signalling to contribute to the better understanding of chronic pain.

Since 2019 the program has supported 157 emerging scientists and their bold ideas to improve brain and health outcomes for Canadians. The Future Leaders in Canadian Brain Research program is made possible thanks to an anchor gift from the Azrieli Foundation, matched by Brain Canada through the Canada Brain Research Fund (CBRF), a unique arrangement between the Government of Canada (Health Canada) and Brain Canada, with the support of additional generous donors and partners.
