Your inner saboteurs: What they are and how to manage them

Negative emotions can be overwhelming but understanding them and knowing how to manage them provides benefits for long term well-being.

The University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy’s Women in Pharmacy Leadership (WIPL) program hosted a tailored webinar on February 19, 2025 to tackle these negative emotions. Over 70 attendees joined the WIPL program to learn more about saboteurs, thinking habits that generate negative emotions within us as we handle life’s everyday challenges. They sabotage our performance, well-being and relationships every day.

Barbara Gobis (BSc Pharm, RPh, ACPR, MScPhm, PCC), pharmacist and leadership coach, began the session with a grounding exercise to put attendees in the right mind frame. She then led attendees through a presentation that explored what saboteurs are, the science behind them, why we have these saboteurs, their impact on our lives and ways to tame them through mental fitness.

Your saboteurs lie to you to keep you safe and protected. The goal is to know your saboteurs and reclaim the gifts that make you special.

Gobis’ goal is for attendees was to understand themselves better, to successfully embrace change and opportunity in their lives without these negative thoughts.

A lively and insightful Q&A wrapped up the session that gave attendees helpful tools to take away.
