Research goals

My primary research focuses on two main areas: study of prognostic factors in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and study of gene-environment interactions in schizophrenia.  Similar to rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus, individuals with PsA experience increased morbidity, mortality, pain and disability compared with the general population.  The identification of factors that influence course of PsA may help to improve treatment and management and ultimately reduce illness burden.   Like most complex disorders, the susceptibility to schizophrenia is believed to be due to multiple genes and interacting non-genetic factors. especially during the period from conception to childhood and adolescence.  In families demonstrating genetic predisposition to schizophrenia involving the NOS1AP gene, my colleagues and I have investigated the role of childhood trauma and  other commonly measured childhood adversities, including physical illness and cannabis use on the expression of schizophrenia in this familial sample, independent of measured genetic risk.
