My thesis
The consumption of sugary drinks has been increasing around the world and may contribute to the development of diet-related chronic diseases. As a result, governments have begun implementing policies to reduce the intake of these beverages and promote product reformulation among manufacturers (e.g., through taxes and front-of-package nutrition labels); however, the effectiveness of these policies is currently unknown.
My research will examine the impact of these policies by evaluating the nutritional composition of beverages across different countries. Specifically, I am interested in determining whether sugar levels, container sizes, and use of no-/low-calorie sweeteners may differ across countries with and without these policies.
This research will help us better understand how sugary drink policies can promote product reformulation and shape our food environment, while informing policy development in countries looking to prevent obesity and promote public health.
My time in the School of Public Health Sciences
Being a graduate student has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences of my life. I am incredibly lucky to work with the most supportive supervisor, who has provided me with the opportunity to write journal articles on a variety of interesting topics, attend conferences, and work with a talented team of collaborators (both in Canada and abroad).
During my graduate studies, I have enjoyed meeting professors who are passionate about supporting public health and the well-being of graduate students. It has also been wonderful to connect with my peers through university-wide events and volunteer opportunities (such as the department’s peer mentorship program). I also appreciate the many opportunities available to continue developing my skills, particularly through the Fundamentals of University Teaching Program and GRADflix (a science communication competition).
Looking back, I am proud of my accomplishments over the past few years and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
