My Thesis

In my dissertation research, I am evaluating the implementation and use of technology designed for older adults, called AgeTech, in a unique care setting for older adults with dementia located in rural, northern British Columbia (BC).

Through community engagement activities, three AgeTech solutions have been chosen to be implemented in the facility to support clients with dementia. These solutions include technologies like circadian rhythm lighting, a hydroponic indoor garden, and an interactive and virtual cycling activity.

This is the first time that AgeTech is being used in a dementia care setting in northern BC. I will study the implementation process and the impacts of adopting AgeTech on the care experience and quality of life for the persons with dementia, staff, and care-partners. The results of my research will inform practice and policy change specific to the rural context and will help support future implementation and use of AgeTech in other care settings for persons with dementia across Canada.

My Time in the School of Public Health Sciences

Attending the School of Public Health Sciences has been an enriching and rewarding experience. I completed my BSc and MSc before entering my career. I returned to SPHS for my PhD as a part-time student because I knew I would receive rigorous academic training, mentorship and support while being able to continue my professional career.  My time in SPHS equipped me with the knowledge and skills to succeed in an applied health research position.

SPHS has offered so many opportunities for me to network with professionals, experts, and other students in the field. Guest lectures, conferences, and professional development opportunities provided me with valuable connections that have played a pivotal role in my career path.

A highlight for me has been my ongoing participation in the Canadian Evaluation Society Student Case Competition. Alongside fellow SPHS graduate students, we have had the opportunity to apply the program evaluation knowledge and skills we acquired as part of our studies in SPHS to tackling real-world evaluation challenges. Through this competition I have had the opportunity to learn from my peers, build new relationships, and enhance my personal and professional skills.

The most memorable aspect of my time in SPHS are the social connections I have made. Having supportive and collaborative peers and mentors has been incredibly valuable to my academic and personal journey. The importance of these social connections cannot be overstated.

Being part of the SPHS community of like-minded individuals who share similar aspirations and challenges has provided a sense of belonging and support, making the entire experience more manageable and enjoyable. The staff and students in SPHS have created a nurturing and inspiring environment that has made my journey through graduate school more rewarding and memorable.
