Number Theory seminar

Yongqiang Zhao, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Counting cubic fields with bounded discriminant”

In this talk, I will present the recent work of establishing the secondary terms of counting functions of cubic number fields or cubic function fields with bounded

Thursday, October 3, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebraic Topology learning seminar

Janis Lazovskis, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Grassmannian structure and oriented bundles”

We will begin by creating a CW-complex structure for the infinite Grassmannian manifold, which will make computation of the cohomology classes easier.

Friday, October 4, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Analysis seminar

Ami Viselter, University of Alberta

“Ergodic theory for quantum (semi)groups”

We shall describe a generalization of recent work on aspects of ergodic theory of semigroup actions on von Neumann algebras to the context of quantum semigroups.

Tuesday, October 8, 2013 10:30 am - 10:30 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

Constraint Satisfaction and Universal Algebra seminar

Ian Payne, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"The Absorption Theorem and its Proof (Part 2)"

I'll spend the first few minutes finishing the proof that spiralled into obscenity at the end of last week. Following that and a quick recap, I will give the last definition required to state the Absorption Theorem. The rest of the talk will be devoted to proving it.
Tuesday, October 8, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Kadison-Singer seminar

Adam Dor-On, University of Waterloo

"Kadison-Singer V"

We embark on a more in-depth survey of Interlacing Families II by Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava.
Tuesday, October 8, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Group Cohomology learning seminar

J.C. Saunders, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Introduction to Tensor Products”

Alex Berenbeim will finish his talk from last week and then we introduce the basics of tensor products.

Thursday, October 10, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebra seminar

Rahim Moosa, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"D-varieties and Jason Bell's Conjecture on differential ideals"

A few weeks ago Jason Bell gave a talk in this seminar on \delta-ideals in finitely generated algebras over C equipped with a C-derivation \delta. He gave a theorem and made a conjecture.

Thursday, October 10, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebraic Topology learning seminar

Janis Lazovskis, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Complex vector bundles and the Chern classes”

With a sizable inventory of definitions and theorems having been established, we will now be able to introduce Chern classes, the first characteristic classes to be associated to complex vector bundles.

Friday, October 11, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Universal Algebra seminar

Alexander Wires, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Taylor Algebras from Digraphs Should Have Better Identities"

We provide a characterization for finitely generated Taylor varieties similar to that given for congruence meet-semidistributive varieties established by Ross Willard.
Friday, October 11, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Analysis seminar

Michael Hartz, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"Multiplier algebras of embedded discs"

In this talk, we will consider multiplier algebras of certain Hilbert function spaces on varieties in a complex ball. These are precisely the multiplier algebras of complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces. The isomorphism problem for these algebras was studied by Davidson, Ramsey and Shalit.
