Waterloo Engineering alumni company Clearpath Robotics has secured an additional US $5 million to fuel global growth of Otto Motors, its industrial division.
The investment boosts the total of its latest round of financial backing to US $34 million following the announcement in June of US $29 million.
RoboHub's very own Katja Mombaur and her team of graduate and post-doctoral students are starting their work with REEM-C, the newest humanoid robot at Waterloo. At 165 centimetres tall and 80 kilograms in weight, REEM-C is described as the 'slightly smaller and lighter brother' of TALOS, the RoboHub's full-size humanoid robot.
RoboHub collaborator Ning Jiang, a Professor in Systems Design Engineering and co-founder of Brink Bionics, has secured $350,00 in seed funding to commercialize innovative technology for the gaming industry.
Professor Moojan Ghafurian touches on a new study about the slow acceptance of robots as individuals experience isolation or see how it is affecting others. Canadians have shown openness to buying and using social robots whether or not they've been positively or negatively affected by the pandemic.
This work was done in collaboration with several RoboHub researchers including Professor Kerstin Dautenhahn, a member of the core RoboHub research team and the Canada 150 Research Chair in Intelligent Robotics
RoboHub Director William Melek and RoboHub collaborator Patricia Nieva have partnered with Facedrive Health to incorporate new algorithms in a new COVID-19 tracing app called TraceSCAN.
The algorithms will be able to provide information about physical distancing, isolation measures that a person who tested positive for COVID has taken, and testing results for individuals all to better forecast the spread of COVID-19 and predict any further outbreaks.
RoboHub collaborators Ehsan Toyserkani and Mihaela Vlasea, the Directors of the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Lab (MSAM), have worked to create personalized facemasks for front-line workers and patients with autoimmune deficiencies.
Our very own RoboHub technician, Robert Wagner, has been featured in both the MME and Waterloo Engineering news for his efforts in building a PPE-free COVID-19 testing booth for a local hospital.
RoboHub collaborator Ehsan Toyserkani, Director of the Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing (MSAM) Lab, has used 3D printing and nanotechnology to create wearable technology able to monitor everything from vital signs to athletic performances.
RoboHub Director William Melek has been interviewed in a two-part article on the impact of collaborative robotics and autonomous systems on the automotive industry in Canada.
