A team of engineering students at the University of Waterloo, supported by the RoboHub, WEEF, and several other on-campus groups, has climbed to the top of the standings in an international robotics competition.

The UWAT VEX U team, which has been growing steadily since its launch in 2018, has been ranked first among 77 teams from around the world, including China, Mexico, Spain and Morocco, in the VEX U event operated by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation.

A research team led by Amir Khajepour, a professor of mechanical and mechatronics engineering, has spent four years and well over $1 million on the autonomous bus project, dubbed WATonoBus, and is now doing final testing to ensure it can handle winter weather.
