Industry leader signs on to teach core Environment and Business course

The founding principal of environmental consulting firm AET Group Inc. has signed on to teach Environment & Business 202 (Environmental Management Systems) this fall.

Scott Freiburger is highly qualified for the role of sessional instructor with 17 years of experience in the field. In addition to academic theory, he plans to integrate his practical knowledge of environmental management systems and auditing into the course. He will be supported by Janet McKenzie, another Principal with AET.

Scott is currently a Principal and Technical Director at AET Group Inc., which was originally founded in 1998 operating under the name Associated Environmental Technologies that was renamed AET Consultants in 2001. As the founding principal of AET, Scott pioneered the development, implementation and monitoring of solid waste management programs for the construction and IC&I industry. The programs were designed to put industry in compliance with the 3Rs regulations, reduce waste generation and increase waste diversion. In 2008, under Scott’s leadership, AET Consultants forged a merger with three other environmental consulting companies, which included EcoServices, Integrated Green Building Concepts (IGBC) and Eco2 Systems to form the AET Group. AET Group Inc. is a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting, auditing and scientific services company offering services in Solid Waste Management, Environmental Management & Compliance, Environmental Audits, Natural Resources Management, Sustainability, Air Quality & Climate Change, Environmental Remediation, Water Resources, Energy & Utilities, and Building Sciences.

Scott is an accomplished business owner with progressive business and program development experience coupled with a solid operations background in both the public and private sector environmental industry. Working primarily in the auditing field, Scott has extensive experience overseeing large waste studies, energy assessments, managing accreditation audits and audits of numerous standards and systems. Scott is a results-oriented individual with a passion for developing and fostering positive change. He brings ideas to reality.

Scott has over 17 years of experience in environmental consulting. He is a graduate of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo and has a diploma in Environmental Engineering from Conestoga College. Scott is an Applied Science Technologist, a Certified Environmental Auditor, a Certified Environmental Management System Lead Auditor, a Certified Energy Advisor and a Certified Environmental Professional (Waste Management, Health & Safety, Environmental Manager, Natural Resources Management). He is also a LEED Accredited Professional with the Canada Green Building Council and a Certified Facilitator.

Janet McKenzie

Janet McKenzie
Janet McKenzie is a Principal and Senior Environmental Specialist at AET Group Inc.  Janet has over 17 years experience in environmental management, regulatory compliance, communications and sustainability. Her 12 years of developing, implementing and maintaining environmental management systems in various industrial sectors has given Janet invaluable work experience and innate insight into the ISO14001 Standard. Janet has led and participated in many benchmarking and environmental assessment projects throughout Ontario for various industries, organizations and municipalities.  With this being a core service group of AET Janet uses her experience to promote sustained resource consumption and energy, water and waste reduction initiatives for all her clients as an integral part of their evolving environmental management plans. Specialized communications and stakeholder engagement is another area of expertise for Janet.

Janet is a graduate of Environmental Science from the University of Guelph and is a Certified Environmental Auditor, and a Certified Environmental Management System Lead Auditor.   She has co-authored an article on “Corporate Environmental Responsibility: Adding Value to the Bottom Line”, which was published in the Environmental Science & Engineering Magazine.

About the course

ENBUS 202: Environmental Management Systems

The examination and evaluation of Environmental Management Systems such as ISO 14001. Alternate EMS systems will be compared and reviewed to identify their respective strengths and weaknesses. Case studies will be used to illustrate the ideas presented.
