Professor Heather Hall, a researcher and Academic Director of the Economic Development and Innovation Program in the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED), has been awarded a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant. The research is to work with the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation (CRRF) to understand COVID-19 impacts, responses and recovery needs for rural Canada.

Professor Hall has been working with the foundation and a team of Masters of Economic Development and Innovation (MEDI) students Camila Bravo, Daniel de Prats Cid, Emma Stucke and Nana Ntim – to provide timely resources and information on the impacts of COVID-19 on rural economic development.

As part of their capstone project, the MEDI team:

  • Posted over 30 rural innovation stories on CRRFs social media platforms #COVID19rural;
  • Updated the CRRF COVID-19 Resources webpage to include over 125 links to resources from across Canada and around the world;
  • Launched a survey to over 350 rural municipalities across Canada on the rural economic development impacts, responses and recovery efforts needed; and
  • Completed a rural impacts scan for each province and territory in Canada.

Professor Hall has also co-authored a Rural Insight Report for CRRF on Supporting Rural Recovery and Resilience After COVID-19.
