Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Sarah Berdowski, a fourth-year undergraduate Environment and Business student, and Shenali Madhanaroopan, a Masters graduate student in Sustainability Management, along with teamates Kent Chin, in Global Business and Digital Arts; and Iris Guo, in Accounting and Financial Management, achieved 2nd place in the Fighting Climate Change with Innovation - Concept competition. Motivated by their passion for sustainability, the team presented their browser extension "Neutrify" to a panel of judges and received a $2,500 grant to further fund their idea.

Neutrify is a browser extension that customizes a user’s web browser. This browser extension intends to motivate customers to change their purchasing behaviours by buying more sustainable food. To influence consumer decisions, Neutrify offers carbon footprint data and recommends alternatives to reduce fossil fuel emissions. The solution allows for consumers to see the environmental impact of their purchases from start to finish.

Waterloo’s Concept partnered with the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change to fund business ideas to solve climate change.
