We know this is a nerve-wracking time, but don’t worry!

Hi! My name is Matthew, and I’m an upper-year student in the Honours Arts and Business program at the University of Waterloo. I’m also the School of Accounting and Finance’s Marketing and Recruitment Associate for this co-op term! As part of my job, I speak to a lot of students about the status of their applications, and I wanted to give you some insight into why you do not need to panic if you haven’t received an early offer of admission.

So, you applied and are now anxiously waiting on a response. I know the feeling. I didn’t get my admission offer until May and waiting for that answer was really anxiety-inducing.

But I’m here to tell you that you do not need to worry! Yes, some people will be getting early offers at the end of February or early March. But there’s still another large round of offers to be made in May, so you don’t need to panic!

Remember that not all early offers are based on who has the highest marks. For programs like the Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) program, admission decisions are made based on your marks on the AFM Admissions Assessment (AFMAA) and the Admission Information Form (AIF). Offers are also made based on when marks are made available to the University of Waterloo. So, if your school board submits your school’s grades later, your admission decision will be made later.

Here are a couple of things you can do to keep yourself calm during this time.

1. Talk with your friends

Your friends are probably going through the same thing as you. Talking with them and feeling like you aren’t alone in your stress might make it easier to deal with. Venting is needed sometimes and can be really helpful during such a stressful time.

2. Research university life

To spend the time while waiting to hear about your admission decision, you might want to start getting ready to enter university. Having all your ducks in a row regarding courses, residence, and just what to expect in general might help keep your mind off the long wait.

3. Pay attention to your high school courses

Any offer you get is going to have some conditions, so you will need to keep your grades up! Make sure to keep up the hard work and finish your last year of high school off strong. Not only is it productive, but it will help you keep yourself busy and makes the wait feel not as long.

4. Let yourself breathe

It’s been a long year, and you’ve been working hard. While I know I said you should still keep working away at school, let yourself relax for a bit. You’ve done all you can do and deserve a bit of rest and relaxation.

I hope this helped alleviate some of your stress! I hope your final year of high school is going well, and I can’t wait for you to join us here at SAF.
