Our study examines whether implementing a novel approach for incentivizing employees to engage in behavior desired by the company is associated with changes in employee behavior. We use proprietary data from a company using an online learning platform where employees could voluntarily participate in daily training.

Recent accounting research indicates that capital markets price firms' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and that disclosed emissions levels are negatively associated with firms' market values.

This paper examines how the interaction of perceived subjectivity and pay transparency in profit allocation is associated with an important aspect of law partners' professional judgment, namely their tendency to accede to the wishes of their client and fellow partner (labeled hereafter as partner accedence). Based on interviews with 56 corporate law partners working in large Canadian law firms, we find higher partner accedence in a less subjective system than in a more subjective system, but only under no pay transparency.

Historically, roles within the finance industry have been dominated by men with very little representation from women. Lana Paton’s (BMath ’93, National Managing Partner, Business Units, PwC Canada), generous gift to establish the Lana Paton Women in Finance Scholarship hopes to bridge this gap.

Upkar Arora (BA '85, MAcc '85) understands just how powerful our investments can be.

He joins us to talk about his work at Rally Assets, an impact investment firm. Plus, he speaks about his personal investments to Waterloo as an alumnus, donor and committed volunteer. Bill Anderson, Chairman of Sun Life Financial Inc. (TSX: SLF) (NYSE: SLF), announced today that Sun Life President and Chief Executive Officer, Dean Connor intends to retire August 6, 2021.

Kevin Strain, currently Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, will be appointed as President and a member of the Sun Life Board of Directors effective February 15, 2021. He will assume the Chief Executive Officer role upon Mr. Connor's retirement. Mr. Connor will also retire from the Sun Life Board of Directors in accordance with company policy.

2020 FCPA Inductees

The Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario) celebrated the appointments of those named to CPA Fellowship. Among the 50 newly named FCPAs, were 8 SAF alumni and Dave Vert, retired faculty member of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance (SAF).

Mike focuses on financial literacy month. First, Judith Robertson, Commissioner of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, speaks about what her organization does and what they’re focusing on during financial literacy month. Then Tracy Hilpert, a Lecturer of Managerial Accounting with the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance and the Director of the department’s Financial Literacy Competition joins to explain how their competition teaches financial literacy to high school students and how classes can get involved.
