Candidate Statements - Faculty of Engineering

Faculty Representative to Senate

David Clausi
Professor
Systems Design Engineering

As the incumbent Senator representing Engineering, with your support I would look forward to a second term to continue to provide effective academic oversight for UW. I have broad administration experience, now serving on the VPRI Nominating Committee and in past serving on a Presidential Nominating Committee and two Dean Nominating Committees. I have been Associate Chair – Graduate and I have recently been renewed as the Associate Dean - Research. I have contributed university-wide by initiating the creation of the Research Operations Committee. As a Director of the VIP Research Group, I co-lead a large computer vision research program.

Chao Tan
Professor
Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering

As a faculty member of mechanical engineering, a researcher in sustainability, and the current Associate Dean International at the Faculty, I hear the calling for new faces with knowledge from different cultures to represent our faculty at the Senate. Avoiding monocultural bias in decision making matters to FOE and UW. We are facing competition worldwide in a complex environment. It is important for the decision-makers to ensure that UW continues to have the capacity for self-government and autonomy. I am ready to share my 30 years of experience in academics and to promote decision-making based on diverse knowledge sources.
