Summary of the September 18, 2023 Senate meeting

The University of Waterloo Senate is comprised of faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, governors, and administrative staff who are both elected and ex-officio members. This governing body of the institution is the highest authority on academic matters and meets regularly to discuss topics such as academic programs, educational policies, appointments, and other academic priorities.

At the September 18, 2023 meeting, the following items were approved:

  • New academic plans
    • Doctoral and master’s plans in Electrical and Computer Engineering – Aeronautics
    • Minor in Social Innovation and Impact
    • Diploma in Restorative Justice
    • Specialization in Restorative Justice
  • Amendments to academic plans
    • Diploma in Studies in Islamic and Arab Cultures
    • MA in Psychology
  • Definitions for in-person, blended, and online classes
  • Amendment to the faculty constitution for the Faculty of Engineering

Additionally, Senate received updates for information:

  • Actions taken in response to the attack in Hagey Hall in June 2023, and further actions/initiatives planned
  • Faculty Update – Engineering
  • Student housing availability and affordability, including the University’s commitments and plans
  • Update on international student enrollments
  • Recently announced compensation adjustments for University staff, following Bill 124 being declared “void and of no effect”
  • List of honorands for Fall 2023 convocation
  • Annual report on tenure and promotion of faculty members
