Bike Month 2021 Recap

In June, we asked the University of Waterloo community to participate in our Bike Month campaign, a four-week contest that encourages individuals to snap a photo of themselves on a bike ride or share their favourite cycling story. Although the Sustainability Office normally hosts its Bike Month activities in-person, Bike Month 2021 was designed to be entirely virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, this post briefly summarizes how active and passionate the community is for cycling in their day-to-day lives.

There are many resources available to support cyclists on campus and in the community. From bicycle-friendly cafes, to trails, to repair stations and more, we’ll share a list of resources to get you started on your cycling journey in Waterloo Region.

Did you know that June is Bike Month? Now that the weather has (finally) warmed up, what better way to get around town than by bike? Not only is biking beneficial to your health, it’s also good for the planet AND your wallet. This blog post will explore just a few of the many health, environmental, and economic benefits of biking.

Health benefits

With warmer weather here for the rest of the summer, many are starting to tune-up their bikes and hit the road to get to school or work! It’s no surprise that people opt for biking to school or work as it can be more cost-effective, healthy, and environmentally-friendly.

Commuting to campus on my bike is unglamorous common sense. Parking is free, and it turns the road rage of rush hour driving into joy. Cycling also makes me feel fast and powerful – not everyday feelings for many women. With all of these benefits, it's certainly worth a try!
