New artificial intelligence (AI) models can help doctors prioritize care by predicting which COVID-19 patients are most at risk of dying or developing kidney injuries during hospitalization.

Early research into the growing electronic sports (esports) industry highlights a need for better coaching to prevent burnout among professional players.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo, identified several areas, including player fatigue, mental stress and peak performance conditions, that require in-depth research to improve coaching and player performance.

Sanaz Saadatmand Hashemi, a systems design engineering doctoral candidate, is one of four recipients across campus of this year’s Amit and Meena Chakma Awards for Exceptional Teaching by a Student.

New technology has promising potential to improve cancer screening

A new form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that makes cancerous tissue glow in medical images could help doctors more accurately detect and track the progression of cancer over time.

The innovation, developed by researchers at the University of Waterloo, creates images in which cancerous tissue appears to light up compared to healthy tissue, making it easier to see.

This week Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) and Biomedical Engineering (BME) students presented their fourth-year design projects at the 2022 Capstone Design Symposium. Teams showcased everything from a seizure monitoring and detection headband for infants to unique tools that can help Canadians optimize their energy usage.
