Incoming engineering student starts his studies at Waterloo backed by a $100,000 scholarship

For the second year in a row, a winner of a prestigious national scholarship has chosen to study systems design engineering at the University of Waterloo.

Malik Dahel of Montreal started his academic career at Waterloo Engineering this fall as a 2021 Loran Scholar backed by up to $100,000 over four years for living expenses, tuition, summer work opportunities and other benefits.

Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) and Biomedical Engineering (BME) welcomed incoming undergraduate students with First Year Design Dayz.

SYDE and BME students kicked off their undergraduate degree programs with Design Dayz, a department orientation tradition in its sixth year. Each Design Dayz offers new activities, with the core goals of community building, teamwork, and design culture.

Systems Design Engineering (SYDE) student awarded Schulich Leader Scholarship, a national undergraduate STEM scholarship.

From about the age of 10, Andrew D’Souza (BASc ’08) began to think of inventive ways to earn money. An early entrepreneur, whose family immigrated to Canada from India, D’Souza started providing services like paper-delivery, lawn mowing and dog walking to his neighbours. Later, he took on part-time jobs to save for university because he wanted to avoid debt.
