The current legend, as well as the previous version, are available below. These may be more current than what is displayed on the back of an official transcript being viewed.

Grading - Effective Fall 2001

Averages are reported in all Faculties as percentages. Average calculation values are used for overall averages for students with letter grades on their records. Numeric grades on a scale from 0 – 100 as well as CR and NCR will be used by all Faculties.


Undergraduate Studies

Grades for all courses taken prior to Fall 2001 appear on transcripts either as one of 15 letter grades from A+ to F-, or as numeric grades on a percentage scale.

Graduate Studies

Grades for all courses taken prior to Fall 2001 appear on transcripts either as one of 10 letter grades from A+ to F, or as numeric grades on a percentage scale. Any course with a numeric grade below 60 will not be counted for credit and is considered a failure. In some programs a grade higher than 60 is required for the course to count towards degree completion.

Graduate Studies Notes

  1. Graduate students must obtain an average of at least 70% in the set of courses they present in fulfilment of course requirements for any graduate degree. Some departments may require higher program averages or course grades for graduate degrees.
  2. The grading scheme for the external institution applies to courses taken for Graduate Studies transfer credit. A grade status of “T” is applied where the grading system from an external institution differs from that of the University of Waterloo.
  3. A standing of INC will convert to FTC following a lapse period of two academic terms.
  4. Courses “GS – Continuing Graduate Studies” and “GS 999 Continuing Degree Requirement” are administrative courses which are not graded.
