Daily Bulletin
Established in May 1993, the Daily Bulletin is an electronic news bulletin issued daily for people at the University of Waterloo, available online directly or through the Current Students, Faculty, and Staff pathway pages.
The publication has been described as "a combination of breaking news, facts, highlights and a modest amount of literary comment".
The Daily Bulletin is produced by the Internal Communications team, who also produced the weekly UW Gazette until it ceased publication in 2004. The editor and usual author of the Bulletin is Brandon Sweet, associate director of internal communications.
The Daily Bulletin is published at 9:00 a.m. each working day, 12 months of the year.
Daily Bulletin e-newsletter
Beginning in the fall of 2016, the Daily Bulletin is also available as an e-newsletter, mailed to subscribers around 10:00 a.m. each working day. Each issue contains photos and teaser text for the day's content, which will continue to be available on the Daily Bulletin's website.
In the initial 2016 launch of the e-newsletter, all faculty and staff were automatically subscribed, but had the option to unsubscribe on the e-newsletter's subscription page. Currently, subscriptions are on an opt-in basis.
Students, retirees, and general community readers are invited to subscribe to the e-newsletter by adding their email address on the e-newsletter subscription page.
Daily Bulletin submission guidelines
What goes in the Daily Bulletin?
The Daily Bulletin seeks to be the perfect blend of material that is useful to the reader, useful to the management, and interesting enough to keep someone reading.
As such, the Daily Bulletin is the perfect home for:
- Announcements and news of campus-wide importance
- Brief mentions of events taking place in the next day or two
- Information that will be of widespread use to people on campus
- Links to Web pages both at UWaterloo and elsewhere that provide more information about whatever's being reported — such as the full texts of reports, or the home pages of departments that are mentioned
The Daily Bulletin does not include:
- Commercial advertising
- Long texts reproduced word-for-word (though excerpts and quotes that retain the flavour of the original may be posted)
- Announcements that will only be of interest to a few people
- Community events, unless there is a significant and tangible connection to the University (via sponsorship, partnership, or other collaboration)
How do I get information onto the Daily Bulletin?
Send photos, links, announcements, suggestions, event notices and general information to the editor. Emailing the editor at bulletin@uwaterloo.ca is the preferred way. The editor will consider your material and handle as seems appropriate.
Information from other sources, such as campus newsletters and the proceedings of open meetings, will also find its way into the Bulletin at the editor's discretion.
The primary place to announce activities (meetings, lectures, performances) happening at the university is through the Waterloo Events calendar. If you think it also deserves Daily Bulletin attention, you can email separately to the editor of the Bulletin.
How do I submit a story idea to the Daily Bulletin?
The Daily Bulletin is interested in ideas for stories and other items to be featured in the Daily Bulletin. Email the editor to get the process started.
How do I submit an article to the Daily Bulletin?
The Daily Bulletin regularly features articles written by members of the campus community. To be considered as a feature article, the piece should be between 250 to 500 words; anything smaller can usually go in a compendium of notes run as a bottom article.
Please ensure that the author’s name is included in the article submission so proper credit can be given.
How can my content get featured on the Daily Bulletin?
The Daily Bulletin regularly repurposes online content from a number of sources and we ask permission before doing so. If you have content already published that you would like to see in the Daily Bulletin, please submit the link to the editor. In most cases, an excerpt of the previously published material will be included in the Daily Bulletin, with a link back to the source for further reading.
Please ensure that the original author’s name is included in the submission so proper credit can be given.
How do I submit a photo to the Daily Bulletin?
The Daily Bulletin accepts photos in .jpeg format. For photos appearing at the top of an article, the maximum size is 500 pixels wide. For photos appearing in the right-hand sidebar, they should be a maximum of 220 pixels wide. Photos used in the body of an article will be resized at the editor’s discretion.
Photos are most useful if they are accompanied by a short text, to be used as a cutline, that describes the photo. Please include the photographer’s name so proper credit can be given.
How do I submit an event to the Daily Bulletin?
The Daily Bulletin’s “When and Where?” column is drawn from the main University of Waterloo events calendar and other sources as appropriate. Events that are to be included in the Daily Bulletin’s “When and Where” column should be submitted in the following format:
Event Name, Day of Week, Month, Day of Month, Time of Day, Location. Include a link that can be used to highlight the event name.
A few examples:
Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology seminar, “Engaging in Research at Hamilton Health Sciences,” Monday, January 16, 3:00 p.m., DC 1304.
