UpToDate: new access to an evidence-based Point-of-Care tool for the School of Optometry & Vision Science

The School of Optometry and Vision Science now has access the evidence-based point-of-care (POC) tool UpToDate, to support clinical decision making. Covering more than 10,000 clinical topics, UpToDate is a popular resource used by medical doctors, and the only POC tool available through Library Services at the University of Waterloo.

What's the future of the library in the age of Google?

CBC's Cross Country Check-up was at the University of Waterloo, Stratford Campus this last weekend for a townhall, hosted by Peter Mansbridge. The discussion was entitled "What's the future of the library in the age of Google?", and focussed on the future of libraries in a digital age. Laura Bredahl, our Optometry Liaison Librarian was in attendance, as well as Annie Bélanger, University of Waterloo's Associate University Librarian.

The Witer Learning Resource Centre's previous manager and liaison librarian, Kathy MacDonald, has recently published an article in the Journal of the Medical Library Association, entitled Evidence-based Practice instruction by faculty members and librarians in North American optometry and ophthalmology programs.

New Liaison Librarian in the Witer Learning Resource Centre!

We have a new librarian joining the staff of the Witer Learning Resource Centre (WLRC). Laura Bredahl, has been the Liaison Librarian for Math, Computer Science, and Physics & Astronomy at the Davis Centre Library for the past six years, and will take over Rebecca Hutchinson’s librarian duties here in Optometry.

Finding the latest evidence-based research as a practicing optometrist

As more peer-reviewed journals are becoming freely available (see our previous news item), how can researchers and clinicians identify the best portals for searching this literature? We recently analyzed four of our most popular search interfaces (research databases) to compare their coverage of our vision science journal collection.
