List of available requisite rules

Below is the list of rules that the University of Waterloo has programmed to use, by course requisite type. The rules appear below in the same order they appear on the Courses form (alphabetical order).

Prerequisites

Prerequisite rule options When to use

Earned

  • minimum cumulative average
  • minimum grade in
    • all courses from selected subject codes
    • all selected courses
    • minimum number of selected courses
  • minimum number of units from
    • selected courses
    • selected subject codes
    • selected subject codes and range

When a student must have earned:

  • a minimum cumulative (overall) average
  • a specified minimum grade in several courses or in a choice of courses
  • a specified minimum number of academic units in several courses or in a choice of courses

Enrolled in

  • Program & Plan offered by a selected group
  • selected program

When the course is only open to students enrolled in:

  • a group (e.g., faculty, department)
  • a program/plan

More than one program/plan can be listed (must be in alphabetical order) and will automatically be listed as an "or" list.

Recommendation is to list as specific programs/plans where feasible as this leads to clarity for all stakeholders and more accurately matches the coding in Quest.

When used, wording must be chosen from standard phrasing.

Standard wording to use:

  • Must have completed the following: [list of courses]
  • Must have completed at least # of the following: [list of courses]
  • Earned a minimum [name of major] average of #.0%
  • Enrolled in [list of programs/plans]

Must have completed

  • all selected courses
  • minimum number of courses from selected courses
  • minimum number of total units

When a student must have completed:

  • a set course or courses
  • a minimum number of courses from a list of courses
  • a minimum number of total units to take the course, regardless of grade earned

Obtained

When a student must have obtained one or more milestones to take the course (e.g., Fine Arts Health and Safety Milestone, Fine Arts Woodshop Workshop Milestone, Community Service Learning (CSL) Milestone). If a milestone is not listed, contact the Office of the Registrar.

Students must be

  • in selected degree level or higher
  • in specific degree level

When a student must be:

  • in a selected degree level or higher (e.g., level 2A or higher)
  • in a specific degree level (e.g., must be level 2A)

Corequisites

Corequisite rule options When to use

Completed or concurrently enrolled in

  • all selected courses
  • minimum number of selected courses

When a student must have already completed or be concurrently enrolled in:

  • all of a set list of courses
  • a minimum number of courses from a set list

Enrolled in

  • selected program
When a student must be concurrently enrolled in a selected program or plan.

Standard wording to use:

  • Completed or concurrently enrolled in: [list of courses]
  • Completed or concurrently enrolled in at least # of the following: [list of courses]
  • The corequisite listed is only for students in [name of plan(s)]

Students must be

  • in selected degree level or higher
  • in specific degree level

When a student must be:

  • in a selected degree level or higher (e.g., level 2A or higher)

Antirequisites

For topic courses, include thecourse Subject + Number, Topic Number and Title. Standard wording to use:

  • Not completed nor concurrently enrolled in: Subject+Number (Topic Number: Topic Title)

For example:

Not completed nor concurrently enrolled in

  • any of the selected courses
When a student must not have completed or be concurrently enrolled in any of the courses in a list of courses.

Not earned

  • any more than a certain number of units from
    • selected courses
When a student must not have earned more than a certain number of units from a list of selected courses.

Not obtained

  • minimum number of milestones
When a student must not have obtained a minimum number of milestones (e.g., Fine Arts Health and Safety Milestone, Fine Arts Woodshop Workshop Milestone, Community Service Learning (CSL) Milestone). If a milestone is not listed, contact the Office of the Registrar.

Not open to students enrolled in

  • selected programs
When a course is not open to students enrolled in specific programs or plans.

Students must not be

  • in selected degree level
When a course is not open to students in a selected degree level.
