Standard wording for Programs & Plans form fields

(for undergraduate studies proposers)

This page provides some examples of standard wording used in text box fields on the Programs & Plans form in Kuali Curriculum Management. 

If wording already exists to describe the same idea you are trying to describe, the standard wording is required to be used.


Minimum Average(s) Required field

Appears in a bullet format.

Standard wording Reason/Details

A minimum cumulative overall average of ##.0%.

Used to stipulate an overall average; for a major/degree.

A minimum cumulative major average of ##.0%.

Used to stipulate the major's average.

A minimum cumulative special major average of ##.0%.

Used to stipulate if the major has a second average that needs to be calculated; usually modified with more specifics at the end.
A minimum term average of ##.0%. See promotion rules. For Engineering. Used to stipulate the major's term average.

A minimum cumulative minor average of ##.0%.

Used to stipulate the minor's average.

A minimum cumulative option average of ##.0%.

Used to stipulate the option's average.

A minimum cumulative diploma average of ##.0%.

Used to stipulate the diploma's average.

A minimum cumulative [credential type] average of ##.0% in all SUBJECT CODE#1 and SUBJECT CODE#2 courses.

Used to stipulate that the average is made up of all courses taken for both subject codes listed.

If more than two subject codes need to be listed, separate with a serial comma.

A minimum cumulative [credential type] average of ##.0%: required courses and all SUBJECT CODE#1 and SUBJECT CODE#2 courses.

Used to stipulate that the average is made up of all the required courses listed in the plan as well as any courses taken for both subject codes listed.

Graduation Requirements field

Standard wording Reason/Details

Complete a total of X units May end with a period or a colon (if there are sub-bullets).

Complete a total of X units of SUBJECT CODE and approved courses.

Used when need to clarify that the requirements for the plan are for a specific subject code plus a list of approved courses.

Co-operative Education Program Requirements field

For students in the co-operative system of study, see Bachelor of X co-operative education program requirements. For co-op and regular programs. Link (on everything after "see") pointing back to common degree requirements page.
  1. Complete a minimum of [number] credited work terms:
    1. A minimum of [number] must be standard work terms.
  2. Complete a minimum of [number] Professional Development (PD) courses:
    1. PD1: Must be taken in an academic term prior to the first work term.
    2. PD#: Must be taken during the first work term.
    3. [Number] additional PD courses: To be taken during the second, third, or fourth work terms.
      OR
      [Number] additional PD courses: To be taken during subsequent work terms.
      OR
      [Number] additional PD courses: To be taken during each work term until the requirement is complete.

For degree requirement pages or majors that also list degree requirements (no link to a central page).

"[number]" is spelled out.

For bullet #3:

  • Option 1 is used for Environment and Heath. 
  • Option 2 is used for Engineering and Science.
  • Option 3 is used for Arts and Mathematics.

Additional Constraints field

Standard wording Reason/Details
Students may only complete one course from any cross-listed set. Used to 1) indicate there are cross-listed courses within the requirements, and 2) to clearly make sure students know they can only get credit for one of the courses in the set.
No one course may fulfil more than one requirement within the major/Minor/Specialization. Used to explain that a single course, which may appear in more than one list or fulfil more than one type of requirement, can only be used towards one requirement.
Exceptions to the requirements and electives listed above require prior approval of the advisor/associate chair/director/etc. Used to stipulate who to contact for exception requests.
Courses transferred from other institutions without a specific course designation (e.g., SUBJECTCODE 1XX) may only be counted towards the [subject] electives. Used to stipulate how unspecified transfer credits will be applied towards the explicit list of requirements.
Courses obtained on a Letter of Permission (LofP) or in transfer credit must be equivalent to courses listed in the course requirements. Used to stipulate how transfer credits and LofP credits will be applied towards the requirements.
Students may use no more than X unit(s) of SUBJECT CODE X-level courses. Used to stipulate an allowed maximum number of units at a given study level in a specific subject code.
Some terms indicate a choice in the number and type of elective courses to be taken; program requirements can be found in the Graduation Requirements section. Engineering specific.
The course taken in the Ethics List can also be used towards the CSE or the PD requirements. Engineering specific.
If any required courses are waived for students with advanced language skills, they must be replaced with SUBJECT CODE electives. Language plan specific.
By agreement, students at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University are allowed to take courses in [subject] at either university. Used when a formal agreement exists for students to take courses between two (or more) institutions and the courses do not act like transfer credits.
Students who opt to take CS136 are required to take CS136L (0.25 unit) as they are listed corequisites. CS136L is graded as CR or NCR (Credit or No Credit). A CR grade in CS136L will be used towards the total unit requirement, but it is not required for this plan. Used in a scenario where a course listed within the requirements (required or optional) has a co-requisite that must be completed, but the completion of that co-requisite is not a plan requirement.

Students should be aware that combining some honours plans usually requires additional academic terms of study to complete. May be used on joint honours plan records.
Students are advised to consult with the appropriate advisors before enrolment in courses associated with the joint honours plan. May be used on joint honours plan records.
