Electron and Confocal Microscopy
The facility has a transmission electron microscope, Philips CM10, a Zeiss LSM 510 confocal microscope and associated preparative equipment. This includes two ultramicrotomes. The equipment is available to all members of the university community for teaching and/or research with priority given to members of the Biology Department and the School of Optometry. The facility supports plant, animal, molecular, microbiological, bio-technical, and aquatic research as well as Optometry, Polymer Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Earth Science research interests from other departments. The EM/Confocal Specialist provides technical support to new users, faculty, graduate student, and staff, for specimen preparation and gives comprehensive training in the operation of the equipment and the microscopes. The Confocal microscope is a Biology/Optometry shared resource. Users have access to as much technical support as necessary while working independently to complete their project.
