Documentary Screening 'Anthropocene: The Human Epoch'

The Canadian Coastal Resilience Forum and the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change are pleased to present our inaugural documentary screening of the film Anthropocene: The Human Epoch. A cinematic meditation on humanity’s massive reengineering of the planet, ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch is a four years in the making feature documentary film from the multiple-award winning team of Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier and Edward Burtynsky. The film follows the research of an international body of scientists, the Anthropocene Working Group who, after nearly 10 years of research, are arguing that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century, because of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth.

Civil, Environmental & Geological Engineering Capstone Design Symposium

UPDATE: The Civil, Environmental & Geological Engineering Capstone Design Symposium will not be run as a physical event this year.

In order to mitigate the risks associated with the possible spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the format of the Faculty of Engineering’s Capstone Design Symposia are being modified on a department by department basis. Students are asked to connect directly with their Capstone coordinator for the most current updates.

In Memory of Mansour Esnaashary Esfahani

Our department suffered a grievous loss on Wednesday January 8, 2020. Mansour Esnaashary Esfahani, one of our doctoral students, was onboard flight PS725 that crashed in Iran resulting in the tragic deaths of all those aboard. Our thoughts are with his family, his recent bride, Hanieh, and his friends. We mourn his passing.

Reservoir management could prevent toxic algal blooms

Managing reservoirs for water quality, not just flood control, could be part of the solution to the growth of toxic algal blooms in the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie, every summer. 

In a major study involving data from Canada and the United States, researchers at the University of Waterloo identified reservoirs on streams and rivers as sources of food for algae at the worst possible time.

UW Steel Bridge Team Thanks ESAB for Donation of a New Welding Unit for the Fabrication of 2021 Competition Bridge

The University of Waterloo Steel Bridge Team was happy to receive and test its new Rebel EMP 215IC multi-process welding unit from ESAB earlier this month. This donation will significantly enhance the capabilities of the team to fabricate their bridge for the 2021 Canadian completion, to take place on London, ON early next year. This welding unit will allow the team to carry out their bridge fabrication using any one of a variety of welding processes, including stick, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW.
