Researchers from Waterloo Engineering played prominent roles at a recent virtual symposium staged by the Region of Waterloo.

A team of faculty members, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows led by Nadine Ibrahim, a civil and environmental engineering lecturer, contributed two white papers exploring the implications of COVID-19 on the region’s official planning process.

For the first time, a civil engineering capstone team wins the 2020 Magna New Mobility Award. This award is open to all capstone design teams in Engineering for projects demonstrating significant innovation in the area of electric vehicles and new mobility infrastructure, and includes a $2,000 prize. The team, Darren Sheh, Ivan Lau, Julia Lo, and Ruici Liu formed “Revolt Group” and proposed a Carbon Neutral Gas Station Redesign for Electric Vehicles.

The class of CIVE230 (Engineering and Sustainable Development) have been trailblazers in this remote learning environment in the Spring 2020 term. Learning about sustainability requires systems-thinking and a curiosity to explore. In the COVID-19 edition of the course, there were many chances to create new learning opportunities not only from the course content, but also from the world around us, the media and news, and from each other.
