Professor Solomon Tesfamariam of the University of Waterloo’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has been named a recipient of the Engineering Structures Best Paper of the Year Award for 2025, an international honour recognizing outstanding research published in the leading structural engineering journal.
The award-winning paper, “Reliability analysis of timber columns under fire load using numerical models with equivalent section temperature,” was co-authored with Tongchen Han and appeared in Engineering Structures in February 2025. The journal’s editorial team selected the paper for its innovation, technical rigor, and practical relevance to the design and safety of modern timber structures, particularly under fire conditions.
Tesfamariam is a Professor and University Research Chair at the University of Waterloo, where his research focuses on resilient and sustainable infrastructure, including tall-timber buildings and reliability-based structural design. His work has had a significant impact on advancing performance-based design methods and informing engineering practice and standards worldwide.
The Engineering Structures Best Paper of the Year Award is presented annually to a few papers judged to represent the highest quality published in the journal, which is regarded as one of the top international venues in structural engineering research. Congratulations Soloman!
