A former student at Waterloo Engineering is a co-founder of a Toronto-based startup company that recently secured $10 million in funding to help fuel its growth.

This term, Spring 2022, the Civil Engineering Capstone Design Project was back in-person (though we’ve kept the progress meetings online!) and created this collage of teams. It’s been a very busy and productive term for all the CIVE400 capstone teams that produced excellent conceptual and preliminary designs in their Phase 1.

As part of the Fourth Year Design Project and Capstone 2022, the team “Wastes to Treat Wastes Inc.” from Environmental Engineering received the ESTEN Foundation award by placing 1^st in Canada, with an award value of $1,500.

My name is Naomie Seh Abomo and I am a 3A Civil Engineering student. My industry interests include master planning and resilient urban development. In my free time, I partake in leadership roles such as Social Events, Vice President, and President of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) UW chapter and other roles that allow me to affirm and empower particularly black and underrepresented students. Seven professors at Waterloo Engineering were awarded a total of almost $1.1 million in federal funding this week through a program designed to help attract and retain top researchers.

The backing from the John R. Evans Leaders Fund, a program of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, is earmarked for infrastructure to ensure labs are equipped for world-class research and technology development.

During the days of Jan. 28-29, a team composed of four undergraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering, Planning, and Accounting & Financial Management Students at the University of Waterloo competed in the 8^th edition of the Annual Ryerson Real Estate Case Competition “Expand Your Empire (EYE)” where they won both the First Place Grand Prize and the Most Feasible Design for a total cash prize of $11,500.

Nominated by current CEE graduate student, Soosan Bahramian, Monica Emelko was selected to receive one of the Faculty of Engineering’s Awards of Excellence in Graduate Supervision for 2021 and is being considered for the University-wide Award to be announced next month.

A civil and environmental engineering professor at Waterloo Engineering has had his research chair renewed for another five years by the federal government.
