In 1995, the City of Kitchener created the first municipal artist-in-residence program in Canada. Now, they welcome their first mosaic artist, Faculty of Environment alumna Julie Sperling.
Every year, millions of people travel to Italy to enjoy Neapolitan pizza and authentic gelato. Jennifer Clapp also travelled to Italy for the food, but she didn’t go to eat it – she went to educate her students about it.

The fellowship of the RSC consists of individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, the humanities, science, and Canadian public life. They have been peer-selected as among the best in their field.
School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability PhD Candidate Cole Atlin won the inaugural Dr. Jim McDonald Scholarship from the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Research (ACUNS). The scholarship is given to graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities whose research pertains to Canada’s north and its inhabitants. The award specifically focuses on interdisciplinary and community based research, particularly with First Nations collaboration.
The International Food Policy course run by Prof. Jennifer Clapp had students doing an intensive but high level series of classes and meetings. Drawing on Jennifer's contacts with the UNFAO and related organizations, our students got to see places and meet people not usually accessible. Congratulations to Steven Alexander (PhD graduate) for receiving the 2016 University of Waterloo "Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies" honour. Five such honours were awarded this year at the doctoral level.
Carolyn Mann (BES, 2014) published her ERS 411 thesis in the journal Water Resources Management. Her undergraduate research was on risk perceptions of urban flooding in Toronto. Carolyn is currently a graduate student at Dalhousie University.
SERS MES students in the ‘Sustainability Applications’ class capped off a busy term with presentations to their Toronto Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) partners last week.
