Canadian peatlands as natural climate solutions: Stewardship of our carbon storehouse

Join Dr. Maria Strack for the next GEM Seminar where she shares her research on Canadian peatlands!

Peatlands are wetland ecosystems that store thick layers of organic matter in their soils and therefore are a globally significant carbon sink. Canada is home to a quarter of the world’s peatland area, with Canadian peatlands storing an estimated 150 billion tonnes of carbon. Protecting this carbon storehouse is key to climate action. However, existing and future land-use pressure and ongoing climate change put Canadian peatland carbon stocks at risk of release to the atmosphere.

This talk will explore the state of our knowledge on Canadian peatland carbon storage and greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange, quantify potential GHG emissions arising from peatland disturbance and provide examples of actions that can help manage peatlands for GHG emission reductions.
