On November 29th, after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the University of Waterloo and the Faculty of Environment, are celebrating GivingTuesday─ a global day of philanthropy unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

From leading research in Canada’s frozen north to advancing health and education in developing countries to helping homeowners and municipalities across the nation become more resilient in the face of a changing climate, the incredible impact of this year’s Faculty of Environment alumni award recipients reflect and exemplify values foundational to the faculty itself: community impact, caring and research excellence. 

On July 1st, 2022, the Faculty of Environment will say farewell to Jean Andrey, fondly called Dean Jean, our esteemed dean of eight years. The whole community wishes her the best in her retirement as we reflect on all her accomplishments and contributions to the Faculty.

In the Winter 2022 term, the Faculty of Environment offered an e-Learning Graduate-level Course on Decolonizing Methodologies for Sustainability Research. The course was designed and delivered by School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability (SERS) PhD students Lowine Hill and Madu Galappaththi, and former School of Planning PhD student Sarah Ghorpade.

Lynda Trudeau, Master of Environment and Business graduate at Faculty of Environment narrates her exhilarating convocation experience as the only Anishinaabe graduate from her program and the joy of wearing her traditional regalia for the occasion.

Jeremy Pittman, a professor of Planning in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, was recently appointed as a member of new federal Nature Advisory Committee (NAC), created by Environment and Climate Change Canada to foster ways for Canadians to engage positively with our natural environment.

Today the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) released its report ranking every country on its action toward urgent economic, social, and environmental challenges facing our planet — known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year, Canada fell from 21st to 29th in the rankings.
