Team Salinity, a group of students and recent graduates from the Faculty of Environment, developed SongSAT as a tool to express the beauty of satellite imagery through sound. Beyond the remarkable audio experience of the music that this creates, the software provides an opportunity for the beauty of satellite imagery to communicate to an audience with visual impairments, providing them with an opportunity to appreciate the wonders of the world from above.

Sunwing Airlines recently featured 3 UWaterloo Geography & Aviation graduates in a promotional video, celebrating women in aviation. The video was featured on their Youtube.

GEM Award Winner

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management is very pleased to announce that Amelia Snow is this year's recipient of the Canadian Association of Geographer's Award. This award is granted annually to the most outstanding students graduating in Geography honours/majors programmes at universities or colleges across Canada. Congratulations Amelia!

Aaron Thompson, a masters student in our department, was the winner of the Campbell Scientific Canada Award ($500) at the 71st Annual Eastern Snow Conference, held in North Carolina last week. This competitive award is presented to the author of a paper submitted by a Canadian student demonstrating the most innovative use of technology in the gathering of data.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management is very pleased to announce that Andrei Balulescu, a masters student in our department, has been selected to receive the Lorne Russwurm Award for Outstanding Performance as a TA in the 2013-14 academic year. 

At the recent CAG Annual Meeting, Francesca Cardwell, a Ph.D. candidate from the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, received the Student Presentation Award from the Geography of Health and Health Care Specialty Group.

The Weather and Society study group is pleased to announce the Winter 2014 issue of the "Weather and Society Advisor" newsletter.  This latest issue of the Advisor takes a look at several winter storms that occurred this season, as well as the December 2013 ice storm that impacted the Waterloo region.

Again this year, the Department of Geography and Environmental Management has been ranked in the top 100 Geography departments in the world by UK firm Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd.
