GSEF funds a variety of student-led projects that aim to support and improve the experience of graduate students at the University of Waterloo. The following projects provide examples on the range and diversity of projects that can be funded by GSEF.


Social Events

It Takes A Village

Applicant: University of Waterloo African Graduate Student Association

Purpose: It Takes A Village aimed to develop a sustainable ecosystem of support for UW graduate students of African descent through their educational and professional journey.

Items Funded: Zoom subscription, care package, website marketing, and brand development and design.

Kinesiology GSA Curling Bonspiel

Applicant: Kinesiology Graduate Student Association

Purpose: Students in the Department of Kinesiology had the chance to develop connections with their peers and learn a new sport after two years of pandemic restrictions.

Items Funded: Ice rental and instructor fee.


Community Events

Balsillie School Community Garden

Applicant: Balsillie School Climate Action Committee

Purpose: This project aimed to offset food-related emissions, provide student access to healthy food options, and provide educational and ecotherapy opportunities. 

Items Funded: Soil for garden boxes.

Glitch Unsilent Night 2019

Purpose: An interactive design installation that reveals alternative timelines of the city through projection mapping during Unsilent Night 2019 in Cambridge.

Academic Events

14th Annual Industrial/Organizational & Organizational Behaviour (IO/OB) Student Conference

Applicant: Psychology

Purpose: Annual student-run conference focused on disseminating research and network for Industrial/Organizational psychology and organizational behaviour graduate students in the southwestern Ontario region.

Items Funded: Lunch and venue

Waterloo Nanotechnology Conference

Applicant: Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology Graduate Students’ Society (WINGSS)

Purpose: Hosted a graduate student-specific panel discussion at the Waterloo Nanotechnology Conference on November 23rd and 24th 2019 at the Quantum Nano Centre.

Items Funded: Food, accommodations and transportation (for invited speakers)
