GSEF funds a variety of student-led projects that aim to support and improve the experience of graduate students at the University of Waterloo. The following projects provide examples on the range and diversity of projects that can be funded by GSEF.


Social Events

Rock-Climbing Event

Applicant: Kinesiology Graduate Student Association

Purpose: This event offered Kinesiology graduate students a welcoming space to connect, socialize, and engage in physical activity. Many attendees shared that it provided a much-needed break from their studies and served as an effective stress reliever.

Items Funded: cost of renting the PAC space for 1.5 hours

Tote Bag Painting Event

Applicant: Women in Engineering (WiE) Graduate Student Committee

Purpose: Students in the WiE GSA explored painting through tote bags encouraging their creativity. It also offered a chance for them to network with peers in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.

Items Funded: tote bags, painting supplies, and food-related expenses such as fruit platter, chips, and granola bars


Community Events

Learn How to Meal Prep Event

Applicant: Women in Engineering (WiE) Graduate Student Committee

Purpose: This  event provided students with an opportunity to learn effective meal preparation strategies in an engaging environment while socializing with their fellow grad students! Attendees had fun cooking and sharing a meal together while learning about meal preparation techniques. 

Items Funded: booking fees for the culinary studio space and purchasing groceries

Networking Event by OBEC Waterloo

Applicant: UW Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Chapter

Purpose: The event had eight employers at event and an estimate of 80-100 participants. It was a multidisciplinary event (i.e., companies from different areas) that allowed students to connect with and know different companies in the Civil Engineering sphere.

Items Funded: Personalized buttons and stickers


Academic Events

10th Annual Conference on Vision and Intelligent Systems (CVIS)

Applicant: Vision and Image Processing Lab

Purpose: Annual student-run conference provided graduate students access to world-class keynote speakers who are leaders in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and imaging technologies. These experts shared valuable insights, offering students exposure to cutting-edge research and industry trends.

Items Funded: cost of lunch for conference attendees on Day 1 from Vincenzo's

Research and Practice in Health Sciences (RPHS) Conference

Applicant: School of Public Health Sciences (SPHS)

Purpose: The conference included research being shared by graduate students, discussion about research and professions in public health, a careers panel of alumni, a grant-writing workshop/panel led by Faculty, and real community-building social engagement during lunch and breaks.

Items Funded: food-related expenses such as breakfast, lunch, and afternoon break
